08/4/2004 -Epistle: The Reading
is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 16:4-12
BRETHREN, it seems advisable that I should go also, they will accompany
me. I will visit you after passing through Macedonia, for I intend
to pass through Macedonia, and perhaps I will stay with you or even
spend the winter, so that you may speed me on my journey, wherever
I go. For I do not want to see you now just in passing; I hope to
spend some time with you, if the Lord permits. But I will stay in
Ephesos until Pentecost, for a wide door for effective work has
opened to me, and there are many adversaries. When Timothy comes,
see that you put him at ease among you, for he is doing the work
of the Lord, as I am. So let no one despise him. Speed him on his
way in peace, that he may return to me; for I am expecting him with
the brethren. As for our brother Apollos, I strongly urge him to
visit you with the other brethren, but it was not all his will to
come now. He will come when he has the opportunity.
08/4/2004 - Gospel: 10th Wednesday
after Pentecost The Reading is from Matthew 21:28-32
The Lord said this parable, "A man had two sons; and he went
to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.'
And he answered, 'I will not'; but afterward he repented and went.
And he went to the second and said the same; and he answered, 'I
go, sir,' but did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?"
They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly,
I say to you, the tax collectors and the harlots go into the kingdom
of God before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness,
and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the harlots
believed him and even when you saw it, you did not afterward repent
and believe him."
8/6/2004 - Epistle: Transfiguration of
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
The Reading is from St. Peter's Second Universal Letter 1:10-19
BRETHREN, be more zealous to confirm your call and election, for
if you do this you will never fall; so there will be richly provided
for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ. Therefore I intend always to remind you of these things,
though you know them and are established in the truth that you have.
I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to arouse you by
way of reminder, since I know that the putting off of my body will
be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me. And I will see to it
that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these
things. For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made
known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but
we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor
and glory from God the Father and the voice was borne to him by
the Majestic Glory, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am
well pleased," we heard this voice borne from heaven, for we
were with him on the holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word
made more sure. You will do well to pay attention to this as to
a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning
star rises in your hearts.
8/6/2004 Gospel: Transfiguration of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ
The Reading is from Matthew 17:1-9 At that time, Jesus took with
him Peter and James and John his brother, and led him up a high
mountain apart. And he was transfigured before them, and his face
shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light. And
behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.
And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is well that we are here;
if you wish, I will make three booths here, one for you and one
for Moses and one for Elijah." He was still speaking, when
lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud
said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased;
listen to him." When the disciples heard this, they fell on
their faces, and were filled with awe. But Jesus came and touched
them, saying, "Rise, and have no fear." And when they
lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. And as they
were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Tell
no one the vision, until the Son of man is raised from the dead."
8/8/2004 - Epistle: The Reading
is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 4:9-16
BRETHREN, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men
sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world,
to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are
wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in
honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst,
we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working
with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we
endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and
are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things.
I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as
my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ,
you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ
Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me.
8/8/2004 - Gospel: 10th Sunday of Matthew The Reading
is from Matthew 17:14-23 At that time, a man came up to Him and
kneeling before Him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for
he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into
the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to Your disciples,
and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless
and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long
am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked
him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly.
Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could
we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your
little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain
of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move hence to yonder
place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you."
As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The
Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will
kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day."
8/14/2004 - Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul's
First Letter to the Corinthians 1:3-9
BRETHREN, grace to you and peace from God our Father and Lord Jesus
Christ. I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace
of God which was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you
were enriched in him with all speech and all knowledge - even as
the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you - so that you are
not lacking in any spiritual gift, as you wait for the revealing
of our Lord Jesus Christ; who will sustain you to the end, guiltless
in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you
were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
8/14/2004 - Gospel: 11th Saturday after Pentecost
The Reading is from Matthew 19:3-12 At that time, Pharisees came
up to him and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful to divorce
one's wife for any cause?" He answered, "Have you not
read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and
female, and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father
and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one
flesh'? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore
God has joined together, let not man put asunder." They said
to him, "Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate
of divorce, and to put her away?" He said to them, "For
your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives,
but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you: whoever
divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another, commits
adultery." The disciples said to him, "If such is the
case of a man with his wife; it is not expedient to marry."
But he said to them, "Not all men can receive this saying,
but only those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have
been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs
by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for
the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to receive this,
let him receive it."
8/15/2004 - Epistle: The Dormition of our Most Holy Lady
the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary The Reading is from
St. Paul's Letter to the Philippians 2:5-11 BRETHREN, have this
mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though
he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing
to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant,
being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form
he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on
a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him
the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every
knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and
every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of
God the Father.
8/15/2004 - Gospel: The Dormition of our Most Holy Lady
the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary
The Reading is from Luke 10:38-42, 11:27-28 At that time, Jesus
entered a village; and a woman called Martha received him into her
house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet
and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much
serving; and she went to him and said, "Lord, do you not care
that my sister has left me to serve you alone? Tell her then to
help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha,
you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful.
Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away
from her." As he said this, a woman in the crowd raised her
voice and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you,
and the breasts that you sucked!" But he said, "Blessed
rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!"
