8/22/2004 - Epistle: The Reading
is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 15:1-11
BRETHREN, I would remind you in what terms I preached to you the
gospel, which you received, in which you stand, by which you are
saved, if you hold it fast - unless you believed in vain. For I
delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that
Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, that
he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance
with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the
twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one
time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.
Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all,
as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least
of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted
the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his
grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder
than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God which
is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you
believed.
8/22/2004 - Gospel: 12th Sunday of Matthew The
Reading is from Matthew 19:16-26 At that time, a young man came
up to Jesus, kneeling and saying, "Good Teacher, what good
deed must I do, to have eternal life?" And he said to him,
"Why do you call me good? One there is who is good. If you
would enter life, keep the commandments." He said to him, "Which?"
And Jesus said, "You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery,
You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your
father and mother, and You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
The young man said to him, "All these I have observed; what
do I still lack?" Jesus said to him, "If you would be
perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you
will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." When the
young man heard this he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.
And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you, it will
be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell
you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle
than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." When the
disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who
then can be saved?" But Jesus looked at them and said to them,
"With men this is impossible, ut with God all things are possible."
8/23/2004 -Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul's
Letter to the Philippians 2:5-11
BRETHREN, have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ
Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality
with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the
form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being
found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto
death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at
the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth
and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ
is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
8/23/2004 - Gospel: Apodosis of the Dormition of
our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary
The Reading is from Luke 10:38-42, 11:27-28
At that time, Jesus entered a village; and a woman called Martha
received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who
sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha
was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said,
"Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve
you alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered
her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many
things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion,
which shall not be taken away from her." As he said this, a
woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, "Blessed
is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked!"
But he said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of
God and keep it!"
8/24/2004 - Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul's
Second Letter to the Corinthians 8:16-24; 9:1-5
BRETHREN, thanks be to God who puts the same earnest care for you
into the heart of Titus. For he not only accepted our appeal, but
being himself very earnest he is going to you of his own accord.
With him we are sending the brother who is famous among all the
churches for his preaching of the gospel; and not only that, but
he has been appointed by the churches to travel with us in this
gracious work which we are carrying on, for the glory of the Lord
and to show our good will. We intend that no one should blame us
about this liberal gift which we are administering, for we aim at
what is honorable not only in the Lord's sight but also in the sight
of men. And with them we are sending our brother whom we have often
tested and found earnest in many matters, but who is now more earnest
than ever because of his great confidence in you. As for Titus,
he is my partner and fellow worker in your service; and as for our
brethren, they are apostles of the churches, the glory of Christ.
So give proof, before the churches, of your love and of our boasting
about you to these men.Now it is superfluous for me to write to
you about the offering for the saints, for I know your readiness
of which I boast about you to the people of Macedonia, saying that
Achaia has been ready since last year; and your zeal has stirred
up most of them. But I am sending the brethren so that our boasting
about you may not prove vain in this case, so that you may be ready,
as I said you would be; lest if some Macedonians come with me and
find that you are not ready, we be humiliated-to say nothing of
you-for being so confident. So I thought it necessary to urge the
brethren to go on to you before me, and arrange in advance for this
gift you have promised, so that it may be ready not as an exaction
but as a willing gift.
8/24/2004 - Gospel: 13th Tuesday after Pentecost
The Reading is from Mark 3:13-21 At that time, Jesus went up on
the mountain, and called to him those whom he desired; and they
came to him. And he appointed twelve, to be with him, and to be
sent out to preach and have authority to cast out demons: Simon
whom he surnamed Peter; James the son of Zebedee and John the brother
of James, whom he surnamed Boanerges, that is, sons of thunder;
Andrew and Philip and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and
James the son of Alphaios, and Thaddaios, and Simon the Cananaean,
and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. Then he went home; and the
crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. And
when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for people
were saying, "He is beside himself."
8/27/2004 - Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul's
Second Letter to the Corinthians 11:5-21
BRETHREN, I think that I am not in the least inferior to these superlative
apostles. Even if I am unskilled in speaking, I am not in knowledge;
in every way we have made this plain to you in all things.Did I
commit a sin in abasing myself so that you might be exalted, because
I preached God's gospel without cost to you? I robbed other churches
by accepting support from them in order to serve you. And when I
was with you and was in want, I did not burden any one, for my needs
were supplied by the brethren who came from Macedonia. So I refrained
and will refrain from burdening you in any way. As the truth of
Christ is in me, this boast of mine shall not be silenced in the
regions of Achaia. And why? Because I do not love you? God knows
I do! And what I do I will continue to do, in order to undermine
the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted
mission they work on the same terms as we do. For such men are false
apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of
Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel
of light. So it is not strange if his servants also disguise themselves
as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their
deeds.I repeat, let no one think me foolish; but even if you do,
accept me as a fool, so that I too may boast a little. (What I am
saying I say not with the Lord's authority but as a fool, in this
boastful confidence; since many boast of worldly things, I too will
boast.) For you gladly bear with fools, being wise yourselves! For
you bear it if a man makes slaves of you, or preys upon you, or
takes advantage of you, or puts on airs, or strikes you in the face.
To my shame, I must say, we were too weak for that!
8/27/2004 - Gospel: 13th Friday after Pentecost
The Reading is from Mark 4:1-9 At that time, Jesus began to teach
beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him, so that
he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea; and the whole crowd
was beside the sea on the land. And he taught them many things in
parables, and in his teaching he said to them: "Listen! A sower
went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path,
and the birds came and devoured it. Other seed fell on rocky ground,
where it had not much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since
it had no depth of soil; and when the sun rose it was scorched,
and since it had no root it withered away. Other seed fell among
thorns and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain.
And other seeds fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing
up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold."
And he said, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
8/29/2004 - Epistle: Beheading of the Venerable
Head of the Glorious Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist John The Reading
is from Mark 6:14-30 At that time, King Herod heard that Jesus'
name had become known. Some said, "John the baptizer has been
raised from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him."
But others said, "It is Elijah." And others said, "It
is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old." But when Herod
heard of it he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised."
For Herod had sent and seized John, and bound him in prison for
the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife; because he had
married her. For John said to Herod, "It is not lawful for
you to have your brother's wife." And Herodias had a grudge
against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, for Herod
feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept
him safe. When he heard him, he was much perplexed; and yet he heard
him gladly. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave
a banquet for his courtiers and officers and the leading men of
Galilee. For when Herodias' daughter came in and danced, she pleased
Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, "Ask me
for whatever you wish, and I will grant it." And he vowed to
her, "Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my
kingdom." And she went out, and said to her mother, "What
shall I ask?" And she said, "The head of John the baptizer."
And she came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, saying,
"I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist
on a platter." And the king was exceedingly sorry; but because
of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to
her. And immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard and gave
orders to bring his head. He went and beheaded him in the prison,
and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and
the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard of it,
they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb. The apostles
returned to Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught.
8/29/2004 - Gospel: The Reading is from Acts of
the Apostles 13:25-33 IN THOSE DAYS, as John was finishing his course,
he said, "What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but
after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy
to untie." Brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those
among you that fear God, to us has been sent the message of this
salvation. For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because
they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the
prophets which are read every sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning
him. Though they could charge him with nothing deserving death,
yet they asked Pilate to have him killed. And when they had fulfilled
all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and
laid him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead; and for many
days he appeared to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem,
who are now his witnesses to the people. And we bring you the good
news that what God promised to the fathers, this he has fulfilled
to us their children by raising Jesus.
