Over 50 people attended the first
Orthodox discussion led by Father Demetrios on February 1, 2006
at 6:30 p.m. Father began with an interesting and inspiring reflection
on the meaning of Church in the Orthodox tradition. Rather than
focusing on the physical details we tend to think of when we hear
the word “church,” Father spoke about the metaphorical
incarnation of Christ’s Church in each of His worshippers.
We are all Christ’s Church, Father maintained, and thus
all bear both the responsibility and glory of representing Christ.
After a brief meditation on the theme, Father opened the floor
to discussion. Questions ranged from the differences between the
Old and New Calendar Greek Orthodox Churches; why certain Christian
religions are able to marry Orthodox Christians and others aren’t;
the Church’s position on cremation, organ donation, and
proper dress in Church; and ideas for future discussions.
With growing demands on our time and energy,
it can be difficult to make room for spiritual reflection and
participation. This discussion group aims to bring spirituality
into a personal context while addressing the real concerns and
questions of our young Orthodox congregation. The discussions
aim to be relevant to our everyday lives while inspiring us to
think more deeply about the faith so many of us have been born
into and often take for granted.
